INTRODUCTION

The Meneren Corporation, a National Business Incubation Association member, has been responsible for  the planning, development and management of the various "business incubators", including the Margaret Thatcher Business Center, which was designed to include a Western-style business incubator.

WHAT IS BUSINESS INCUBATION?

Business incubators have proven successful in accelerating the development and longevity of emerging businesses. In many parts of the world, including the U.S., the U.K. and Japan, business incubators have dramatically increased the growth and success rates of start-up companies.

A recent E.U. survey of its business innovation centers found that survival rates for new businesses in a business incubator were 88 percent, compared to 50 percent for small businesses generally.

In the United States alone, business incubators have spun off more than 19,000 businesses.

RAK AND THE FREE ZONE

Business Incubators were an innovative strategy to create a safe haven for businesses in this Gulf Emirate. With its strategic location providing access to Middle Eastern markets, the Ras Al Khaimah Free Zone is emerging as a leader in business innovation and development. The RAK Free Zone includes business, industrial and technology parks, planned for the RAKFZ by Meneren.  In the center of this Free Zone is a first-of-its-kind Business Incubator complex that not includes two completed/occupied incubator buildings with one additional building under construction.  This complex acts as a catalyst in attracting business and industry, and in fostering new ideas.

THE MARGARET THATCHER BUSINESS CENTER (MTBC)

As a strong supporter of economic development and ethical business, Margaret Thatcher offered her name and support to the RAK Center. As a result, the facility reflects the same strong values and support for the small-business person that she has championed worldwide.

BENEFITS TO RAK/UAE AND BEYOND

The MTBC project has changed the way business is done in RAK and the region. The MTBC was designed to nurture and train a whole new generation of innovative business people.

According to a U.S. national incubator survey, of the companies graduating over the last two years 80 percent of them relocated within the same city. The incubator's location within a free zone will provide increased incentive for graduate companies to remain in RAK.
