INTRODUCTION

The Meneren Corporation, a National Business Incubation Association member, is currently involved in the planning, development and management of the Margaret Thatcher Business Center, which will include a Western-style business incubator. This innovative facility will be the centerpiece of the RAK free zone development project in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. Following is a brief discussion of the MTBC.

The development of the Ras Al Khaimah Free Zone is an innovative strategy to create a safe haven for businesses in which they can grow free from limitations prevalent in other locations. The free zone will include a unique “Business Center” which will act as a catalyst in attracting business and industry, and in fostering new ideas.

RAK AND THE FREE ZONE

With its strategic location providing access to Middle Eastern markets, the Ras Al Khaimah Free Zone is staged to emerge as a leader in business innovation and development. The zone will include business, industrial and technology parks, and will be centered around a first-of-its-kind Business Incubator.

THE MARGARET THATCHER BUSINESS CENTER (MTBC)

As a strong supporter of economic development and ethical business, Margaret Thatcher has offered her name and support to the Center. As a result, the facility will reflect the same strong values and support for the small-business person that she has championed worldwide.

WHAT IS BUSINESS INCUBATION?

Business incubators have proven successful in accelerating the development and longevity of emerging businesses. In many parts of the world, including the U.S., the U.K. and Japan, business incubators have dramatically increased the growth and success rates of start-up companies.

A recent E.U. survey of its business innovation centers found that survival rates for new businesses in a business incubator were 88 percent, compared to 50 percent for small businesses generally.

In the United States alone, business incubators have spun off more than 19,000 businesses.

UNIQUE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The MTBC will offer investors the unique prospect of becoming involved in the initial stages of a high-growth business supported by international and national business leaders and the government of Ras Al Khaimah. Investors can also establish a foothold in the rapidly expanding markets of the Middle East.

Investment in the MTBC will allow companies to establish their presence in a constant flow of expanding businesses. It will also give them access to new technologies, intellectual property, possible acquisitions, and synergistic relationships with start-up companies. In addition, investors will be able to take advantage of frequent leadership and business development training programs and seminars. Investors will also have opportunities to negotiate equity stakes in start-up businesses.

Various methods of involvement are available to interested parties. The MTBC will strive to meet their needs by providing investment opportunities in many forms, including cash contributions, sponsorships and pro-bono services.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACCELERATED BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

The MTBC will provide innovative incubation services to start-up companies. In addition, its strategic location within an emerging free zone will provide commercial, busines, and industrial space into which graduates of the center can grow.

BENEFITS TO RAK/UAE AND BEYOND

The MTBC project will change the way business is done in RAK, UAE and the region. The MTBC is designed to nurture and train a whole new generation of innovative business people.

According to a U.S. national incubator survey, of the companies graduating over the last two years 80 percent of them relocated within the same city. The incubator's location within a free zone will provide increased incentive for graduate companies to remain in RAK.
